Does Blogging Help SEO? The proof you always wanted showing that blogging does help SEO! Find out how to rank your blog posts here.

Does Blogging Help SEO

When I first started blogging for SEO purposes, I began by picking some keywords with decent search volume and then began building links to that page. That worked ok for a while, but there was really something missing in this strategy.

I know this is true for many of our web development clients, and you might even be familiar with constantly checking your keyword rankings and feeling the frustration of not being able to control their movement.

When I speak to these clients about the importance of blogging for seo to rank content the most common response is;

“Does blogging help seo?   I don’t really think blog posts are going to achieve what we’re after.

This thought process is the biggest flaw in SEO strategy for your website.

Your focusing on ranking for a few keyword terms instead of focusing on providing what your customers want.

Why Not Do Both? Rank for a LOT more keywords and give your readers what they want?

You can learn a lot about the type of content your customers are looking for simply by listening to them.

Sometimes customers come in and know exactly what they want.

But most of the time, they are going to have a bunch of questions.

They know they want to buy something… but they aren’t ready, yet.

I know in our business, we hear the same questions over and over.

What about YOU? Do you ever wind up answering the same customer questions again and again?

I’m sure you do, and this is where blogging can really help your seo and your customers.

Some examples of questions we get asked are:

If you want blogging to truly help your SEO, then you have to do it right!

This got me thinking…

Maybe, just maybe there’s a better way to approach blogging for SEO to rank content.

Almost every article I’ve read on blogging for traffic and rankings starts off by telling me to pick highly effective keywords. How many of you have read something like this;

“you need to target the specific keywords and phrases your potential customers are searching.”

Topics: The Real Key to get your blogging to help your SEO

Instead of focusing on keywords I began focusing on Topics. It’s a subtle difference I know, but the difference is astounding! I began ranking for keywords that mattered to my customers, not what I thought mattered based on search volume.

Do you know what happened?

I started ranking on the first page of Google within 12-48 hours for these posts and our website traffic grew leaps and bounds!

More importantly, we began to rank for much larger clusters of keywords by focusing on quality blog post topics instead of actual keywords.

Turns out, the same questions and problems people were asking us on the phone, they were also googling!

So, does blogging help SEO? Yes, and it can help your SEO too!

If you’re not using blog posts to boost your SEO strategy – you are missing out!

If you’re a small business owner who’s still wondering… does blogging help SEO? – here are six undeniable reasons start blogging now.

1. Create Blog Posts If You Want to Attract a Following

When you initially launch a blog, it probably won’t receive much traffic – and that’s okay. As your blog grows and becomes more popular, it will generate a strong following of loyal visitors. These visitors may follow your blog and/or its RSS feed on a daily basis, checking to see when new content is published.

2. If You Want To Announce New Products or Services

A blog is the perfect platform on which to announce new products or services. If your business recently added a new product to its lineup, let the world know by writing about it in a blog post. Assuming your blog has a strong following, this can bring invaluable attention to your business’s new product.

3. Blog Posts = Lead Generation

Of course, blogging is also an effective method for generating leads. You can install a newsletter signup form, for instance, allowing users to enter their email address in exchange for email delivered by your business. Alternatively, you can set up an inquiry form where visitors enter their personal information to learn more about your business or its products/services.

4. Blog Post Can Target Local Search Optimization Too

Blogging can also prove useful in local search optimization (LSO). If you are trying to rank for geo-specific keywords (e.g. your city + business niche), you can write high-quality blog posts containing those keywords. Search engines will notice these keywords when crawling your site, encouraging higher search rankings in the process.

5. Be The Authority

You’ll present your business as an authority figure in its respective industry or niche by maintaining a blog. If a prospect is forced to choose between a business with a blog and a business without a blog, they’ll probably choose the one with a blog. Why? We already talked about this a little… but by answering your potential customers’ questions, you are establishing yourself as an authority in your industry. This instills trust and confidence in your knowledge and services. The key thing to remember, however, is that you need to publish high-quality content on a regular basis.

6. It’s Easy to Create Blog Posts

Blogging is actually easier than most business owners realize. Thanks to user-friendly blogging platforms like WordPress, you can have a blog up and running in minutes. Creating new content for your blog is also easy, as WordPress and similar content management systems (CMS) use a web-based interface.

How To Craft The Perfect Blog Post for SEO

Know your customer and tell them a great story.

Develop a narrative – The BEST blog posts tell a story using anecdotes, strung together to advance the narrative.

For example something that worked great for me was uncovering exactly what happens when you’ve worked so hard to build your reviews and reputation on Amazon and then someone leaves you crappy feedback or a review possibly without even having used the product yet?”

Customer-centric value – Back your blog posts up with amazing statistics & percentages.

In my Amazon Feedback Post, I did NOT have dazzling stats, but I did have something even more powerful… I had hundreds, maybe thousands of potential customers who had experienced that very issue. I then backed up my post with an actual rock solid way to remedy negative Amazon Feedback.

Address human needs Blog Posts shouldn’t talk about how great a product or service is, a blog post should make you say: “Man, I have GOT to have this!”

There are dozens of Amazon articles about seller feedback, but what’s not very prevalent is a clear way to fix negative seller feedback. If you’ve used Amazon – you know it’s not the most transparent sales channel. You also know how important your seller rating is when it comes to the buy box and customer trust. Let’s just say, it’s enough to make a seller say “Man, I have got to have this.”

Visualize the message – Convey emotion through visual stimulation, and use a variety of visual elements such as videos, infographics, memes, comics, SlideShares and quotes.

Size Does Matter – As much as I wish it didn’t, size does matter. The length of your blog content has a direct impact on your search rankings. My rule of thumb is to have a minimum of 1,000 words but 2k plus is even better for ranking content. Am I throwing out random numbers? Nope. This is tried and true over several years of blog post publishing.

I can also back it up with some pretty cool statistics from QuickSprout:

The average content length for a web page that ranks in the top 10 results for any keyword on Google has at least 2,000 words. The higher up you go on the search listings page, the more content each web page has.

word count content

Based on the graph above, you can see that the first result typically has 2,416 words and the 10th result has 2,032 words. This shows that Google prefers content rich sites.

What To Do if You’re Short On Blog Post Ideas

For many new site owners it can be very difficult just coming up with some ideas for blog posts. This is a difficult place to be… you’ve got little content on your site, no comments to feed from, and the lack of search rankings and traffic has got you all stressed.

Get Blog Post Ideas From Your Competitors

I don’t care what industry you’re in – you’ve got a competitor out there that’s generating content and ranking with blog posts and you can find out what’s working for them and replicate their strategy.

1. Research Your Competition’s Ranking Blog Posts

You can find which of your competitors’ blog posts are getting shared to and linked to the most by using tools like Ahrefs Content Explorer or Buzzsumo.

Both tools can take a URL and show you a site’s most shared content.

Here’s how:

First, go to Ahrefs content explorer and put in the URL of the competitor you want to research.

You can then, sort by total shares (or by a number of other metrics) and see what comes up.

When you find topics that have been widely shared, you know that this is a validated topic for your audience.

If you find that you still need help finding blog post topics or writing for those topics, you can use the very same blog writing system that I use to drive lots of traffic to our blog. I like to call it my little blog post generator.
